1. Ione, my grandma on my father's side, died tragically at the age of 50.
2. My family took me on vacation to Holland for the Tulip Festival, and although I was two years old, supposedly a "terrible" year, my mom says that I actually behaved quite well and did not crush any flowers.
3. The boy to whom I would lose my virginity many years later was born in 1984.
4. 1984 was a great year for pop culture icons that I grew into by 1986 or '87, including The Muppets Take Manhattan, Cyndi Lauper's "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun," and my favorite Peanuts cartoon: Flashbeagle, a parody of Flashdance starring Snoopy as a beagle who goes out to clubs by night and sleeps by day.
5. Like most Michiganders, I shared many hours in front of the television with my family, watching the Detroit Tigers on their magical 1984 run to the Pennant.
