1. I went bowling with my friend Mia at a bowling alley in Hollywood and she introduced me to her friend Steve, who would become my second husband in 1988 and who died of lung cancer on February 17, 1993.
2. When I met Steve I was very happy because I'd just landed a COOL job as the art and architecture writer for a major newspaper, andÊhe tried to impress me by babbling on about Russian Constructivism in the parking lot after we bowled.
3. I turned 29 that July, which means in my life 1984 was the year of the difficult, challenging, ass-kicking Saturn Return.
4. Having read George Orwell's "1984" in high school, of course I thought it was remarkable to be living through theÊyear itself, but inreality it was incredibly anti-climactic.
5. IÊhappen to believe we are living our own 1984 RIGHT NOW, and that the Bush Administration is operating in a manner that is far, far more scary than anything Orwell ever dreamed up.
