1. I completed my leaving certificate exam to leave secondary school (in Ireland).
2. I moved to another town and began art school.
3. I read George Orwell's 1984 (I was determined to do it in 1984.)
4. I made the startling discovery that it wasn't too daunting to interact and be friends with boys, after 5 years in an all-girl's school where I hardly knew a single boy.
5. By Christmas that year, I found that I was already different from many of my secondary school friends who had gone elsewhere for college. We knew different people now. We tried to hang out and it was kind of fun, but this was the last Christmas we made the effort.
