This is apparently a common practice in Asia and among Asian-Americans. I learned it from my mother who is Vietnamese. It's generally effective for whatever ails you, but I find it especially helpful for sore muscles and respiratory problems.
You need two things;
Eagle Brand Medicated Oil (Or Tiger Balm, or eucalyptus oil, etc)
A coin, preferably an American quarter or larger
1. Rub Medicated Oil on your back.
2. Before the oil dries, grip the coin between your thumb and forefinger and rub the edge of the coin firmly against your back. (It'll be awkward at first)
3. Do this until the area is a mottled red, then move on to another area. Repeat a few times.
I'm not entirely sure how, but it relieves the discomfort.
