Sunday morning. He is humming, walking in and out of the bedroom getting ready to go for lunch. I am sitting on the bed sorting out my suitcase.
Me: Hey.
Continues humming and ignores me.
Me: Have I done something wrong?
Him: Look, I think we should take a break.
Pause
Me: Is that it?
Him: We can talk about it later.
Me: My train is later and we are going to meet people for lunch.
Him: It's the prospect of moving down to live together after 4 years of a long distance relationship. The 'domestic bliss' thing is so not for me.
Silence
Me (Upset): I want to say that whoever you end up with, you have to treat them better than you have treated me.
Him: Have I really treated you *that* badly?
Me: Yes.
Him: How?
Me: By not expressing any love or affection, letting me do so much the traveling, not calling, shouting at me repeatedly saying hurtful things as if I were a piece of dirt!
Him: We were having an argument.
Silence
Me: For how long have you wanted this?
Him: Since the wedding. Whilst listening to the vows I realized that I could never say them.
Pause
Him: I just need a few weeks to think about my future. I don't know what my plans are but I do know that I want to do them by myself. We need to go.
I put on my sunglasses to hide the tears. We go for lunch with friends, spend the afternoon drinking and playing Shithead in the sunshine and my taxi arrives. He is upset, I am upset and we say goodbye.
