Ira:
Trying to get people to sing was very difficult. People sitting down tended to be more willing to cooperate. I enjoyed the activity, especially the looks on people's faces while they tried to remember things from childhood. Some people were very discouraging and almost rude. But the majority of people were either willing to sing or laughed at their own self-consciousness. I feel good that most of the people probably enjoyed their memories, but I also have to wonder that maybe some people had traumatising childhoods, and remembering them was possibly not such a great thing.
Meredythe:
Ira and I walked around the Old Port of Portland. We started out on Commercial St. working our way towards the open market. Many attempts were unsuccessful, but a few people really opened right up and sang. In fact, the very first person we asked, Chuck, happily agreed! The highlights of our project were the German song, and the Irish drinking song. We even got someone to explain their movement to try to create a free community center for Portland. All in all we had a blast, even though a lot of people refused to participate.
