Advice to Celeste Sawinski at Fourteen:
.) As a freshman in high school, you will feel alone. Instead of clinging to the first group of people you meet, go talk to Katie. She's not the type of person you usually were drawn to before, but she is the nicest and she will listen when you need it the most.
.) Pick up mom's old guitar. Dust it off, spray some WD-40 on the tuners and put on some new strings. Play it. Listen to music and play what you hear. Don't wait until senior year to try it out. Write about school/people/life. Get it out. Sing it. Don't worry about your voice. It'll get better with practice.
.) Tell mom and dad that you want to play the drums. They'll be glad that you're interested in music and they will support you. Start taking lessons now. This is something you will pick up very quickly.
.) Don't let people get to you at school. Don't believe they're better than you. In college, you'll see Mac again and he will be incredibly ugly. He'll get what he deserves. When he and his friends give you trouble in high school, just yell at them to grow up already. You're better than them.
.) Aileen will come to the high school during your sophomore year. Make friends with her right away. You will have a lot in common. Listen and be a good friend to her. She will become your best friend and the sooner, the better. If you're quick enough, you will save each other from some bad relationships. Make sure you stick together because your other friends will only cause trouble for both of you.
.) Don't get angry at your parents for making you stay home for college. Don't fight the decision. Do your best to find the good in it. They really need your help, so don't be selfish. Don't write angry things about them. They'll find it later on and read it, and you'll just end up hating yourself for hurting them.
.) Do a better job of showing love towards your little brother. He's really a good kid. Play video games, watch cartoons, and go on bike rides together. He's going to grow up fast.
.) Eat more food. You may not realize it yet, but you are so skinny that it's gross.
.) Keep in touch with Melissa. She is going to quit taekwondo and disappear off the face of the earth. You will miss her horribly, so at least get a phone number or something.
.) Don't get carried away with a guy just because he tells you you're pretty. They all say that. Establish friendship first. The other stuff can wait.
.) In math lab, find out that boy's name right away. You'll know which one. Talk to him more before, during, and after class. Don't worry, he'll want to talk to you, too. Don't ignore him and pretend that you don't like him.
