Advice to Amanda Mello at eighteen
1. Avoid meeting boys on the internet. At first this seems like a great idea because you can get over being shy and also you can be whomever you want. So can they. Think about that.
2. Don't sleep with all those boys (the internet ones and the real ones). Do you remember when you told yourself you wouldn't have sex until you were married? That's still a dumb idea (HONESTY!), but it would be best if you don't eventually surpass your age in sexual partners.
3. Don't cheat on Willie with Rod. You will spend the next three years (and beyond?) playing phone tag with Willie and secretly wandering what might have been. You will see each other a couple times a year and have sleepovers/take naps, but you'll never get back together for reasons neither of you quite understand. Your parents and siblings will constantly tell you "You should marry Willie" without understanding that it's really not that simple.
4. Don't date Tim. You are just setting yourself (and him eventually) up for heartache and a hell of a lot of drama. You will miss out on a lot of love, but the pain is hardly worth it.
5. Don't pierce your eyebrow. The scar it will leave behind will be ugly.
6. Choose Emerson, not American. This decision will have a completely unpredictable impact on your life. It will open a door of infinite possibilities.
Don't try. Just be.
