Advice to Megan at age nine...
Don't join the others in making fun of Charles. Don't put that partially solidified mess from your Elmer's glue on his chair. I know it's hard to not be part of the group, but do what you know is right. Stand up for him. Just get up and through it away. You'll only embarrass him and yourself when the teacher makes you remove it from the seat of his pants. You'll have to see his bright, red, tear stricken face in your mind for the rest of your life. You don't understand this now, but his dad is an alcoholic and abuses him, that's what all those bruises are from. Yes, he's strange, but he can't help it. He acts up in class because he's trying to get the attention he doesn't get at home, even if it's bad attention. Megan, you grow up to be a good person who tries not to hurt anyone. Making fun of him, putting that glue on his chair, is the worst thing that you have ever done. You'll regret what you did and often think about the time that you could have been a good person and failed.
