Advice to Lisa at age 18
1. Don't get caught up in the artistic elite thing. It's your thought-process and if you're not interested in it, no one else will be either.
2. Don't define yourself by your friends.
3. Screw criticism that hurts you or stops you from doing what you love. Who cares if you may not really deserve what you want, or someone else may do it better. If you're not on your own side, no one else will be. And believe me, you can't switch sides no matter how hard you try.
4. Stop trying to escape yourself. It just doesn't work, and you're not bad where you are.
5. No amount of self-deprecation and irony will change the fact that you've got what you've got to try and get what you want. And wanting it isn't bad.
6. Trust yourself. You've usually got a good reason to feel the way you do, whether or not you can articulate it at the time. What you want is usually right for you.
7. Stop striving every so often and just enjoy. It doesn't always have to be angsty even if it isn't perfect
8. Travel, scream, dance and play even if it isn't "good" for you or where you're "supposed" to be heading
9. Be a slut. Or in other words, don't be afraid of being a slut.
10. No one will save you, but they can love you. And that's pretty cool.
