To Jen at Age 16:
1. Don't worry. The nightmares will end, even if the worries remain. There's a lot left for you to get through this year, and it really isn't your fault.
2. You only think that Steve is your best friend. Really, that couldn't be further from the truth. It's been a year since he's been genuinely kind to you, and if you keep this up, he's going to walk all over you like you've never imagined and hurt you for being right. This is not a question of loyalty; this is a question of behaving like you mean something.
3. Physics isn't worth losing sleep over. And your teacher is a good guy, even if you don't realize it now.
4. College applications do not determine your self-worth. It's practically arbitrary, anyway. Look at more places, look places further away, look for more thoughtful than famous places.
5. You know how happy you were when Chris came back? Well, maybe that means something else. Maybe to both of you. Maybe you should do something about that.
6. Mark C will get funnier than he already is.
7. Talk louder, talk more often. No one knows any better than you about anything that's going on, and you know it. Don't be afraid to show off your brain.
8. Draw more. You miss it.
9. I know Jazz Band sucks this year and Symphonic band seems like it's not worth it, but really, don't think that your boredom means that you don't love playing saxophone anymore. You will always have it, and it will be your confidant when things go wrong and no one knows anything.
10. Dye your hair. In a little bit, you'll need a job where they won't take too kindly to such actions. Don't miss out on purple highlights.
11. Cooking is a useful habit to learn. It doesn't make you too domestic; it just makes you self-sufficient and happy. Don't you love tasty things? Of course you do. Now learn to make them.
12. Your brother never gets a better taste in girls, and they will always annoy the hell out of you.
13. Robert will be your friend in a high place when it comes to your parents. They never learn to listen to you, but Robert is their baby, and since he can be reasoned with and bribed, he will help you with things that are changeable.
14. Kelly will still be there for you, even though you haven't had to test it in years.
15. Read more. You can never have too many pages behind you, or too many in front of you.
16. A few people who you're too self-conscious to approach think you're cool. They'd be your friends if you just say something.
17. Become an expert on tea and birth control, because you will be the person that everyone can go to for either.
