Advice to Hillary at age 14.
1. You will spend most of your life wishing you were living somewhere else. You will disavow country music, work to keep a southern and/or hill twang out of your voice, and daydream about New England. This is a mistake.
1a. You will not gain any appreciation for where you are from until, at the age of nineteen, you hear the song "O My Sweet Carolina" by Ryan Adams. This is the turning point that will cause you to realize that you love all the places you have lived: Florida, and Kentucky, and Tennessee. Even though the newspaper in your small town keeps spelling the days of the week wrong. Don't let it take you this long to love who you are and where you come from.
1b. Also, that song will sit on your hard drive for a year before you listen to it. Don't wait that long.
2. Don't be embarrassed about liking poems. But don't be embarrassed about liking Ned and Stacey, either. Thomas Haden Church is highly underrated.
3. Learn to cook at a younger age. Besides cookie dough.
