Advice to Caroline at age 12
1. Go ahead! Pierce your ears! Its not so bad.
2. That Becky girl is not your friend, and when she stabs you in the back and makes other people think you're not cool enough to hang out with, its okay. Your other friends may not have the latest jean jackets or Esprit bags, but they're a hell of a lot nicer.
3. If that kid Eric hucks a loogie on you from the top of the stairwell again, don't just stand there and take it, confront him and punch him in the face. Its because he probably feels bad about something else, not necessarily anything to do with you. But just the same, stand up for yourself.
4. News flash: you look like a target. You're shy, you're a little geeky, and you're not the cutest girl on the block. I don't say this to be mean, but being forewarned is being forearmed. Especially against this horrible Stacy Funk person who will come along in about a year or two, threaten you daily, and make you want to quit school. Try not to worry too much. She's all smoke (literally).
5. Life does not end with Junior High, and you will get through this, and high school, and college, and you'll never forget it but you won't have to go back. And when you have nieces and nephews and maybe kids of your own, you'll be sensitive to the daily indignities, tragedies, and sometimes victories that come with being 12.
