Me: Hello

Dad: Hi Miles, this is Dad.

Me: Hi Dad what's up?

Dad: Well, this isn't easy for me to say, but I'm giving it a try. Well, I have been going to therapy to try to figure out better ways to communicate to the people who are important to me, and I have some things I want to tell you.

Me: Um ok.

Dad: (Clearing Throat) So, you know my Dad died when he was my age, and I wasn't really close to him. Anyways, I know that I haven't been so good at accepting you for who you are. I mean, first you told me about being gay, and I just pretended like that never happened, and if you ever mentioned something about being gay I would just wait until your mother changed the subject. Then you figured out that you weren't a woman, and well, I wasn't even comfortable with you being gayÉ.

Me: Uh Dad, so if you are uncomfortable we don't have to talk about this.

Dad: No, no its important. And that whole time after you graduated from college and I kept pressuring you to go to grad school for math, you know that was just me telling you what I would do, but I have come to realize that we are different people, and what is good for us is different.

Me: Dad, do you like have a terminal illness or something?

Dad: Miles I am trying to tell you something here.

Me: Ok.

Dad: Miles I want to let you know that I am through trying to make you fit into my idea of what you should be. Only you know what you should be.

Me: I'm not sure that I do.

Dad: Well, that's ok too. You'll figure it out. You have made it this far and you are doing a great job.

Me: Thanks Dad. Its really awesome to hear this from you.

Dad: I know that it will take time, but I want us to be able to talk to each other about our feelings and I want you to know that I will really listen to you.

Me: Ok, well this is all kind of overwhelming.

Dad: Well, I don't mean to overwhelm you.

Me: I mean its ok, don't worry about it. I mean, thanks for telling me all of these things Dad.

Dad: And if you ever want to talk about your break-up or anything just call me.

Me: Ok Dad thanks, can I call you later?

Dad: Of course. I love you.

Me: You too. Bye.

Dad: Bye bye.
