Do not purchase anything for the assignment, instead, be innovative. Make the pet portable. When you are finished, take the constructed animal out in public. Take it for a walk, take it to a friend's house. Introduce it to other people's pets. When you are done, either keep it yourself or find it a loving home, perhaps with someone who wants a pet but can't have one because of rental rules, etc.
