1. I gave up expatriate life and moved from Tokyo back to California, where I grew up.
2. The summer Olympics were held in Los Angeles; IÊremember pausing in my work and watching from above as a torch bearer ran by the Nissan building.
3. I attended several Olympic events, including a soccer match at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena. I can't remember anything about the match but the sunset was spectacular in that setting.
4. I lived in public housing with my husband and two young children.ÊI discoveredÊa nest of cockroaches in the small cupboard over the refrigerator that has me traumatized to this day.
5. I re-connected with aÊfriend from grade school and we went to visit an former teacher of ours that we had both adored. While hugging her a heart necklace I was wearing came loose and fell into her purse. I did not notice at the time and only much later did the teacher mention to my friend that she had found a mysterious heart carved from carnelian in her purse. Eventually the object and I were re-united.
