1. While my sister was being born, my Godmother and I were looking out the front window of my family's apartment. We saw softly falling snow and her car slowly rolling down the driveway. She bolted outside, and I yelled after her to come back and put some shoes on.
2. I received a clear umbrella for my fourth birthday. It reminded me of a sun parasol from a book, and I was upset at not being allowed to twirl it over my head during my birthday picnic in the park.
3. My family lived upstairs in a triplex. There was orange carpet in the kitchen. An elderly couple lived in one of the apartments; they always saved the glass animal figurines from the Red Rose tea boxes for me. The landlord lived below us, which meant no angry stomping or rowdy dancing on the floors.
4. I left my Cabbage Patch Kid, Marigold Marie, outside on the front stoop. The next morning, she was gone. I cried until my lungs ached.
5. I was surprised to discover that my cousin Nicole was a girl. She'd always had very short hair, so I'd just assumed.
