1. I became a registered voter in 1984. This was the first and last year that I voted for a Republican (namely Ronald Reagan.)
2. My high school bestowed me with the honor of Class Valedictorian which required me to deliver my first public speech. I patiently waited until after the graduation ceremony had concluded to collapse from an overwhelming bout of stage fright.
3. I first heard the song and saw the music video for "Borderline", performed by Madonna. Her self-discipline, prolific artistry and social activism continue to inspire me.
4. I went away to college, the first time I was ever separated from my family for extended periods of time.
5. As a way of keeping myself awake while studying, I began popping Jelly Belly's (yes, those same jelly beans for which Ronald Reagan was so famous as sporting on his desk in the Oval Office.)
