1. This was the year I adopted teen culture, which meant finally giving a crap about things like music and clothes. But not really, because I liked Culture Club. Damn skippy.
2. I fell in love with my friend Tracy. All we ever did was hold hands while napping together, but she was my everything. My mother was horrified. I still miss her sometimes. (And she blamed Culture Club for it. Hee!)
3. My English teacher had us read Lord of the Flies, and then we conducted a mock trial in class. I was a defendant for the bullies. I sucked. All I could think of telling them to do was to take the fifth. Over and over and over. We lost!
4. That same teacher perhaps changed my life for good and for the better when she went around the room pointing out who she thought was a leader and who was a follower. OK, perhaps not an overall great thing for a teacher to do. But when she came to me, she tipped her head to the side and said, "You? You go to the beat of your own drum." It was a revelation, that I didn't have to try to be like everyone else.
5. At the end of the school year's seventh grade dance, I danced with almost every boy who was there, and I was so excited about that, that I went home and wrote about it in my diary, listing each one by name. Heh.
