Fifth grade was coming to an end and Mountain View Elementary School began performing their annual scoliosis screening. It was then that Stephanie first heard of scoliosis and was told that she may possibly have it. After many visits to the doctor it was finally confirmed that 9-year old Stephanie had the disease that causes curvature of the spine known as scoliosis. She had to wear a back brace from the time of the conformation, throughout sixth grade and partially into seventh grade. Then her doctor decided that the brace was not correcting the curves like it was supposed to and that it was going to be necessary to perform correctional surgery. The surgery would consist of placing two titanium rods along her spine correct the curvature that had already taken place and also prevent it. Also in the procedure her spine would be broken and a bone from her pelvis would be inserted - this is called a bone graft - in order for the broken vertebrae to form on solid bone mass once it is healed. The photograph above is the scar that 11-year old Stephanie received from the second part of her scoliosis surgery.
