When I was five years old, I had my entire large intestine removed. I had a severe case of Ulcerative Colitis that did not respond to any treatment and reduced me to a rag doll of a little girl. I had five blood transfusions. My parents found a doctor at UCLA who had invented a new type of surgery for people with my affliction. He performed the surgery in two steps. During the first he removed my large intestine and created a new rectum from part of my small intestine. While that healed, I wore an Ostomy pouch for a few weeks, which is why I have the small scar on the left. Then I had a second surgery which reconnected everything. This procedure saved my life.
