When I was seven, I spent a lot of time hiding under the stairs playing with an X-acto blade. We had moved to Germany from Poland a year and a half before and they didn't have the knives there so I was excited. I would hold pieces of cardboard in front of me and slice them in half. You needed to be strong to slice the cardboard through and I was seven. One time the knife didn't make it through the cardboard, skidded over its surface and cut open the length of my hand. I ran with my red bleeding hand to my mother Unable to reach my father on the phone, she carried me to the neighbor, a woman my sisters and I had always been frightened of. She had no vocal cords and had to speak with a machine. That day she drove me to the hospital.
