As a reward for getting the highest chemistry grade in a test, my teacher invited me to be his assistant in an experiment to show the reaction between water and potassium. Because the class all wanted to see a big explosion they were able to persuade the teacher into using large amounts of potassium in the experiment. He cut up chunks of potassium, placed them on a napkin, and told me to drop them into the water and then jump away quickly. There was a huge explosion and I felt a searing pain on my arm. To my horror, my skin was bubbling due to a potassium reaction. My teacher told me to wash it off, and he took me outside. In a panic he told me not to tell anyone about it; he was sweating as he told me he could lose his job. I had him wrapped around my finger for the rest of the year!
